In Vitro Fertilization is one the most popular treatments for couples wanting a child. As the name suggests, here the egg and sperm are fertilized in the laboratory and embryo is then put inside the uterus for it to develop further. The procedure involves four main steps. First- Controlled Ovarian Stimulation – here Injectable gonadotropin drugs are given for around 10 days to stimulate growth of follicles as monitored by serial ultrasound, which is then followed by trigger for final follicular maturation. Second- Ovum pickup (OPU)- This is a ultrasound guided procedure done under sedation where the oocytes (eggs) are retrieved. Third- Eggs are fertilized with sperms either by conventional IVF or Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). Then these fertilized eggs develop into embryos in incubators. Fourth- Embryos are then transferred into the uterus either in the same cycle of the stimulation when it is called fresh transfer or are cryopreserved to be transferred later, known as Frozen embryo transfer. Success rate of IVF cycle can be upto 60% but depends on many patient factors, most important being female age.
